Officers in Coast Guard are of 3 types; General Duty Officers, Pilot Officers and Technical Officers or law Officers. Both men and women are recruited in all the three types or branches but women Coast Guard Officers are posted at shore jobs only. Only male Coast Guard Officers are posted on the ICG ships and vessels on patrol and other duties.

General Duty Officers

General Duty Coast Guard officers are responsible for various kinds of assignments. The principal duty of General Duty Coast Guard officers is the control and charge of all Coast Guard marine duties and functions and the security of the crew and vessels. General Duty Coast Guard officers are also in charge of weapons, navigation systems.

For e.g. ICG offshore patrol vessel ICGS Vishwast visiting Kobe, Japan will be commanded by General Duty Officers in Coast Guard.

Pilot Officers

The Indian Coast Guard also has an air wing. Pilot officers in Coast Guard are recruited to serve the Air Wing of the Coast Guard. These Pilot Officers could be posted on land at any of the Air Stations or Air Enclaves of the Indian Coast Guard, or they could be posted on board the Coast Guard Ships to fly the Coast Guard airplanes from the ships.

Technical Officers

Technical officers in Coast Guard have the responsibility of operating and maintaining highly advanced electrical and electronic equipment at on-shore installations as well as on-board ICG Ships and Airplanes. Since their responsibility involves engineering skills, Technical officers in Coast Guard are qualified Engineers from different branches. Only Technical officers in Coast Guard can command the maintenance wing of the Indian Coast Guard.

Law Officers

Law officers in Coast Guard have the responsibility of fighting legal cases for and against the Indian Coast Guard. They also are invested with an advisory role pertaining to legal matters. All the 4 regions have a law officer each with a total of ten law officers in the entire wing, out of which there are 2 female law officers. The head of the Law Division of the Indian Coast Guard is the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), and is also nominated as the Chief Law Officer (CLO).

Enrolled Personnel

Junior cadres in the Coast Guard are the Enrolled Personnel. They are grouped as either Yantrik (Technician) or Navik (Sailor).

Yantriks or Technicians operate and maintain all on-board mechanical, electrical, electronic or aeronautical equipment and systems of Coast Guard ships and airplanes.

Naviks or Sailors could work in either General Duty or Domestic sections. The Naviks that work in General Duty are sailors, weapons systems operators, communication specialists, divers, etc or they can perform particular support roles off-shore or in-air. Naviks of the domestic section are stewards, cooks, etc on-board Coast Guard ships. Naviks can also be asked to perform any emergency jobs such as operating weapons if the need arises.
